Hedlund Painting refinished the exterior of a modern cedar home in Clyde Hill, WA. The challenge
This is a modern cedar-clad home in an upscale Eastside neighborhood, where the entire architectural statement rides on the wood. The vertical tongue-and-groove cedar siding wraps the front elevation and the low-slope rooflines, so the finish has to be even board to board with no blotching, no lap marks, and a tone that reads warm and natural rather than painted over. Cedar in the Pacific Northwest also greys and weathers, so the prep and product had to restore and protect the grain. Against that wood, the black fascia, trim, and entry surround needed clean, sharp coverage to hold the home's crisp modern contrast.

What we did
- Walk and wash. Our superintendent walked the elevation with the customer, then we pressure-washed the cedar to strip dirt and weathering before any finish.
- Protect and prep. We masked the stone accents, dark garage doors, glass, and landscaping, then sanded and prepped the cedar so the stain would absorb evenly across every board.
- Stain and finish. We applied exterior wood stain to the vertical cedar for a uniform, warm natural tone that lets the grain show, then coated the black fascia, trim, and entry surround for crisp contrast.
- Cleanup and final walkthrough. We secured gear and the site daily, walked the property with the crew for touch-ups, then walked it with the customer for final approval.
The result
A clean, warm, architect-grade exterior that makes the cedar the hero. The vertical siding reads evenly across the full elevation, grain and natural tone intact, with no blotching or lap lines from gable to garage. The matte black fascia, trim, and entry surround frame the wood crisply and reinforce the home's low, modern profile, and the stone accents and dark garage doors sit cleanly against the refinished siding. The result is a fresh, protected cedar exterior that looks intentional and current, not weathered or over-coated.
