Painting FAQ

This FAQ answers the questions Seattle-area homeowners and property managers ask most before a painting project: what it costs, how the process works, how long jobs take, what our 10-year workmanship warranty covers, and how we handle lead-safe work on older homes. Search the page or browse by topic. Every answer reflects how Hedlund Painting actually works, backed by 130 five-star Google reviews.

Cost

How much does it cost to paint a house?
It depends on size, condition, whether the work is interior or exterior, and how much prep is needed. There is no honest one-size answer, which is why we give a free written estimate with a clear scope. The number we quote is the number we work to, with no surprise change orders.
How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?
Refinishing costs a fraction of replacement when your cabinet boxes are sound. The exact figure depends on kitchen size, the number of doors and drawers, and condition. We give a free written estimate so you know the price before any work begins.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Estimates are always free, and we put them in writing with a clear scope.
Why are painting quotes so different from one company to another?
Scope, prep, paint quality, the crew doing the work, and whether the job is warrantied. A low bid often skips prep or quietly leaves work out, then bills the difference mid-project. We quote the full real scope up front, so the number does not grow once the work starts.
Can you work with my budget?
Often, yes. We can phase a project, prioritize the areas that matter most, or adjust scope. Tell us your budget and we will give you an honest written estimate for what it covers.

Process & timeline

How long does it take to paint a house interior?
Most interiors run a few days depending on the number of rooms, square footage, and how much trim and ceiling work is involved. We give you a firm timeline in the estimate, not a vague window.
How long does cabinet refinishing take?
Typically 3 to 5 days depending on kitchen size, because the doors and drawers are sprayed off the boxes and need proper cure time between coats.
What does your painting process look like?
A superintendent leads your project from the first walkthrough to final approval, so nothing is left to chance. The work itself follows a consistent path: prep and protect, repair and patch, prime as needed, apply premium coatings, then a final walkthrough and cleanup, with daily communication throughout. Management and communication are the parts most painters skip, and the parts our reviews mention most.
Do I need to be home during the project?
No. Many clients are away while we work. We communicate by text on arrival and progress, so you always know where the project stands.
How do you protect my home and landscaping?
We mask surfaces, lay drop cloths, and contain dust and overspray, then clean up fully at the end of each day and at completion. Reviews repeatedly note clean yards and tidy worksites.
How soon can you start?
It depends on the season and our current schedule. Request a free written estimate and we will give you realistic timing for your project. We respond promptly.

Materials & finishes

What paint brands do you use?
Premium lines from brands like Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Rodda, and PPG, matched to each surface and how the space is used.
Do you spray or brush?
It depends on the surface. Walls are typically rolled and cut in by hand, while cabinets are sprayed for a factory-smooth, brush-mark-free finish. We use the method that gives the best result for the surface.
Can you help me pick colors?
Yes. Color consultation is available as an add-on, so you can choose with confidence before we paint. See our color consultation service.
What sheen should I use?
We recommend by room and surface. Flat, eggshell, and satin are common for walls, with more durable finishes for trim and cabinets. The right finish is as important as the right color, and we advise on both as part of your estimate.

Warranty & durability

Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. Every job is backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty. If something is not right with the work we did, we come back and make it right. See our warranty page.
How long does exterior paint last in the Pacific Northwest?
With proper prep and quality coatings, many years. In the PNW, moisture makes prep and product the deciding factors, which is why we do not cut corners on either. The work is backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty.
How long do painted cabinets last?
With proper degreasing, sanding, priming, and cabinet-grade coatings, a sprayed finish holds up to years of daily opening, closing, and cleaning. It is backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty, which most local painters will not offer on cabinets.

Lead-safe & older homes

Do you handle lead-safe painting on older homes?
Yes. We are an EPA Lead-Safe Certified firm and RRP certified. Homes built before 1978 legally require a Lead-Safe certified firm whenever work disturbs old paint. We test, contain the work area, control dust, and clean up to EPA standards. See our EPA Lead-Safe Certified page.
How do I know if my home has lead paint?
If your home was built before 1978, assume it has lead-based paint until a test says otherwise. The risk is the dust created when old paint is sanded, scraped, or disturbed, not the intact paint on the wall. We assess lead risk as part of the estimate on older homes. See our EPA Lead-Safe Certified page for how testing and containment work.

Cabinets

Is it cheaper to paint or replace cabinets?
If your cabinet boxes are solid and you like the layout, refinishing is almost always the smarter move. It costs a fraction of new cabinets, skips the demolition and the weeks without a kitchen, and delivers a factory-smooth finish that looks brand new.
Can you paint cabinets without removing them?
The doors and drawer fronts come off and are sprayed in a controlled area for the smoothest finish, while the boxes are masked and sprayed in place. So they are not removed entirely, but the result is a uniform, factory-smooth finish you cannot get by brushing everything in place.

Decks & fences

How often should you re-stain a deck or fence in Washington?
It depends on exposure and the product used. PNW weather typically shortens the cycle compared with drier climates, especially on surfaces that take direct sun and rain. We assess the wood and recommend the right timing and product.
Do you repair deck boards before staining?
Yes. Carpentry and board replacement are part of our deck work. We repair or replace damaged boards before we stain, because stain over failing wood does not last. See our deck and fence staining service.

Commercial & HOA

Do you paint commercial buildings and multifamily properties?
Yes, including offices, retail, restaurants, hotels, schools, HOA communities, and multifamily exteriors. See our project gallery for commercial and multifamily case studies.
Can you work around our business hours or residents?
Yes. We schedule around operating hours, service windows, and tenants to minimize disruption, and we phase larger jobs so a business stays open and residents stay informed.
