What We Stain

Decks, fences, and the right stain for each.

We work with professional-grade products from Cabots, Sherwin-Williams, and PPG, and match the system to your wood, your exposure, and the look you want, the same standard we bring to exterior painting.

Decks

Ground-level, raised, and rooftop decks washed, prepped, and sealed against PNW weather.

Fences

Privacy and perimeter fences finished for breathable, lasting protection.

Transparent stain

Lets the most grain show through, lighter protection, best on newer wood in good condition.

Semi-transparent stain

The popular middle ground, adds color and UV protection while keeping the grain visible.

Solid stain

Maximum color and UV protection, hides grain, a good fit for older or weathered wood.

Sheen by surface

We select sheen based on whether the wood is walked on, exposed to sun, or vertical.

Not sure which direction to go? Our color consultation add-on helps you choose with confidence, and we confirm exactly what is included in your free written estimate before any work begins.

Our Process

Our deck and fence staining process.

A lasting finish is mostly preparation. Here is how we work, every time, with a superintendent leading the project from the first walkthrough to final approval.

1

On-site estimate

A project manager looks at the wood, the exposure, and the condition, then puts the scope and price in writing. No guesswork, no surprise change orders.

2

Wash and dry the surface

We clean off dirt, mildew, and old failing finish, often with pressure washing, so the new stain bonds to clean wood, then let the wood dry fully, because stain will not penetrate damp wood.

3

Sand, prep, and repair as needed

We smooth rough areas, address splinters and gray weathered fibers, and handle minor wood issues in stride. Anything structural routes to our carpentry and wood-rot repair team so the finish goes over sound wood.

4

Protect the surroundings

Plants, siding, hardscape, and out-of-scope areas get covered before any stain is applied.

5

Stain to spec, with daily cleanup

We apply the right stain and sheen by the method best suited to the wood, brushing, rolling, or spraying for even coverage and proper penetration, and keep the site tidy and our gear secured at the end of each day.

6

Final walkthrough

A superintendent walks the finished project with you for quality control and final approval before we call it done.

Cost & Timeline

Clear pricing, a clear schedule.

What drives the cost

It depends on the size of the project, the condition of the wood, and the stain type you choose. Rather than quote a number that does not fit your project, we provide a free written estimate after looking at the wood in person.

Typical timeline

It varies by size and weather, since stain needs dry conditions and dry wood. We confirm a realistic timeline in your written proposal.

When to re-stain

PNW rain and UV wear finishes faster than drier climates, so most decks and fences benefit from re-staining on a regular cycle. We assess your current condition and advise during the estimate.

As first home buyers, we got very lucky to find this company. We had little knowledge about everything related to repairs, fixing, painting etc.

Contact us
How much does it cost to stain a deck or fence?
It depends on the size of the project, the condition of the wood, and the stain type you choose. Rather than quote a number that does not fit your project, we provide a free written estimate after looking at the wood in person.
Should I stain or paint my deck?
For most decks, stain is the better choice. It penetrates and protects the wood while showing the grain, where paint can sit on top and trap moisture that leads to peeling and rot. We recommend the right system for each surface during your estimate.
How often should I re-stain a deck or fence in the Seattle area?
PNW rain and UV wear finishes faster than drier climates, so most decks and fences benefit from re-staining on a regular cycle. Sun-exposed and high-traffic decks need it sooner. We assess your current condition and advise during the estimate.
Do you spray, roll, or brush stain?
We use the method best suited to the wood and the stain type, sometimes a combination, to get even coverage and proper penetration into the grain.
Can you stain a new deck or fence?
Often new wood needs to weather or be prepped before it will accept stain properly. We evaluate readiness on-site and tell you whether to stain now or wait.
Do you repair the deck or fence before staining?
We prep the surface and address minor issues as part of the job. Larger wood repair, like rotted boards or failing structure, routes to our carpentry and wood-rot repair service so the finish goes over sound wood.
How long does the project take?
It varies by size and weather, since stain needs dry conditions and dry wood. We confirm a realistic timeline in your written proposal.
Is the work warrantied?
Yes. Every project is backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty.
