Deck Finishing on a Seattle Waterfront Rooftop Deck
An elevated Seattle waterfront deck refinished with a deep charcoal stain on the boards and stairs, set against cool gray railings, backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty.
Hedlund Painting refinished this elevated Seattle waterfront deck with a deep charcoal stain on the deck boards and stairs, set against cool gray railings. Overlooking the water through mature landscaping, the deck, walkway, and full stair run were prepped and finished to stand up to Pacific Northwest weather, backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty.
The challenge
This is an elevated waterfront property with a stained walkway running between gray-railed sections, a long exterior staircase, and water views framed by heavy trees and shrubs. A deck in a setting like this takes constant sun, rain, and tree debris, and the stairs are a real safety surface that gets used every day.
The work had to deliver a durable, even finish across three very different surface planes at once: horizontal deck boards, stair treads, and the vertical balusters of the railings. On a structure this exposed, there is no room for thin spots or lap marks. Full, uniform coverage was the whole job, on a deck that sits fully open to the elements year-round.

What we did
- Wash to a clean substrate. Washed the deck boards, walkway, stairs, and railings to a clean substrate.
- Protect the surroundings. Protected out-of-scope areas and the adjacent landscaping before any finish was applied.
- Prep every plane. Prepped the boards, stair treads, and railing balusters for an even, consistent base.
- Stain and finish. Applied a deep charcoal stain to the deck boards and stair treads, finishing the railings and balusters in cool gray, working each surface for even coverage on horizontal and vertical planes alike.
- Clean up and secure. Cleaned up daily and secured gear at the end of each shift.
- Walkthrough and QC. Closed with a superintendent walkthrough of the finished deck and stairs alongside the customer for final QC and approval.
The result
The finished deck is crisp and weather-ready. The charcoal boards and stair treads read deep and uniform, with even coverage across the walkway and the full stair run, and the gray railings and balusters frame the space cleanly against the greenery. The two-tone scheme makes the structure feel intentional and current, and the water view reads as the focal point. A durable, evenly finished outdoor space built to take Seattle weather.
"Hedlund Painting did a great job painting the exterior of our home and staining a large deck and stairs. The crew was thorough, tidy and very professional."
